Sound design is the wonderfully grey area between music & sound FX. It involves blending musical & non-musical sounds to elicit a particular emotional effect or to underscore a specific atmosphere. It's how we evoke sound worlds of fantastic or alien origin, & how we convey the impression of a lost past or distant future.
While traditional film scoring consists of writing music for real musicians to perform on conventional instruments, sound design employs such methods as synthesis, sampling & audio FX.
It allows us to achieve sounds that cannot be recorded through traditional means, such as the screech of a vampire as the stake plunges into his heart, an emergency siren from a dystopian future cityscape, or a mystical flute from a fantasy realm (like the one played by Mr Tumnus in The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe... big Narnia fan here).
Maybe your project calls for a mediaeval-meets-math-rock vibe, some kind of freaky space flute, or a creepy-backwards-violin-possessed-by-a-demon sound. Or maybe you just need someone to design the sounds your app will make when a user presses a button or selects something from the menu.
